What color background is the best?

"I originally had a black background with white letters, which I loved. I felt it was a good color scheme also for my content. But, I got alot of complaints. So what is the best color? Is there anyway I could use black and break up the text in some way and it would work?

Dark page designs don't bother me, but they seem to bother a lot of ppl. That is why I tend to go with white. Light creamy colors are nice too, but adding when adding images, I often find a plain white background works well.

I too, originally had a black background with white or light colors. The recommendation by more than a few told be to leave the black behind and stick to white, soft yellow, cream, and other earth tones. Yes, it is easier on the eyes. I think ou can spruce up your pages with pictures and images. Over 50 eyes do find severe contrasts difficult on the eyes. Wish you the best.

Greens and blues are my favorite colors, as long as their not too dark. Text color has a lot with how annoying a background color is too.

Just pick colors you like and adjust the hues until the contrast doesn't hurt your eyes or make the contend difficult to read. Then have someone who has trouble with high contrast websites take a look at it and tell you what they think.

I won't say I have the most attractive site around, but so far no one has complained about my colors.

I tends to use white or light gray for background and black or dark gray for texts. It's so much easier on the eyes.

I think color depends on your goal. If it's a blog or informative site, I think you can go with darker colors and be okay. I think if you are selling something though, it's better to at the very least go with white in the center/shopping area and then place color around the outside edges. Also, if you go too dark, you have to be careful because your test might not be very readable, depending on the monitor, etc.

I agree. I also find that dark backgrounds are hard to read and follow. I have people tell me they love my colors and I have a very pretty baby blue and white background. I use black as the backdrop for my pictures. It is a nice contrast.

Hmmmmm... No sir, I think I'm liking the black background best! (At least for what I'm peddling!) It neutralizes the glare from the page, and highlights your products.

It depends upon who your audience are..

mostly young people like black because they can read white letter in black background...

For elders they mostly choose white because of ease in readability.

Just be sure to use something as background color that doesn't interfere with your text color.

I have found that for example dark blue text on a white background seems to work well most of the time.

Greetings,

Georg

I have a couple of sites, one with a white background and one with all black pages. I have found through my own experience that it depends greatly on your content and niche market. For a younger audience looking for hip or fun items a black background adds an edgy flair. However, most anyone can find a white or creamy background inviting so it's wise to stay with lighter colors if your target audience has a wide age and/or interests range. Hope this helps. All the best to you..

To me, site colors should be dictated by the information you are presenting or products you are selling......so, it all depends!! Listening to your customers is key to getting the combination of colors just right.

It can take lots of trial and error. I don't think there are any wrong colors, just wrong combinations of colors. If even one person can't read your written words, then change it. If even one person complains that your colors distracted them from shopping your products, then change it.

:-)

I think Your color scheme works perfectly.

I personally love a black background with bright colors, but it all depends on what your trying to sell, and how professional your trying to make it look.

Check out my site. The back ground is Black and the letters are white and sometimes green.

In short i think you should stick with what you have it looks nice. Cant say black would look any better without seeing the lay out to judge. Goodluck!

I say a dark base with a light text color or a light base with a dark text color. Really don't go in between light and dark (like green and stuff lol). Makes it look very unprofessional.

It really depends on what it is that you are trying to sell. White text on a black background is hard for the eye and brain to process. It creates anxiety, which is cool if your site is geared to gamers and kids. But not so great if you are trying sell a product to adults. Usually muted colors, white, or off white like eggshell, work nicely. The thing about color and site design is that it should reduce as much anxiety as possible. For a good book on site design check out "web design for ROI" by Lance Loveday and Sandra Niehaus.

@ Blondie:

I am not really good, you know, at mixing colors. But I think the color of your background (or your blog) should complement your site content. I'm not a fan of purple and the touch of blue in your site just make your site a little bit gloomy. I guess, it complements your latest post - sad. But then again to attract readers, make it a little bit lively, yellow, green, red perhaps or a combination of black and pink or red or green and yellow ? Just a random selection. And put some pictures if you'd like to.

I hope that you could visit back my blog and let me know what you think :)

I'm not picky about backgrounds, so long as they're solid. I can't stand patterned backgrounds. I don't understand why people would be complaining about a black background with white font. I use white, but black is fine too as long as there is strong contrast between background and font color

You have to just keep messing around with it until you find something that works. I don't see anything wrong with a black background and white font, depending on the font that is. Maybe just change the font family? What exactly where the complaints about? Hard on the eyes, blurry?
